At the turn of the century, J & R Forbes Livery & Stable and the W.J. Cleland blacksmith shop were located side by side on the site now occupied by Stratford Place, the building on which these twenty-three paintings are mounted. Before the larger building was torn down in the sixties it served as a popular bowling alley.
